Measurement of Functional Reuse

چکیده

This position paper addresses the measurement of software reuse from a functional perspective rather than from a technical perspective. Many studies have observed that the potential for reuse in software goes far beyond the reuse of source lines of code and includes data, architecture , design, program and common subsystem modules, documentation, test data and various intangibles. These issues are not tackled by reuse metrics based only on lines of code as the unit of measurement. In 1995, Abran and Desharnais proposed the rst version of functional reuse metrics based on the Function Point Analysis (FPA) technique. They illustrated how these metrics could be used to take into account the beneets of reuse in a cost-beneet analysis. We are currently working on the reenement and extension of these functional reuse metrics. This empirical research project includes three phases: (1) test of the proposed functional metrics with other industrial datasets; (2) exploration of its limitations and potential extensions, through the design of much more complex simulated case studies using the data collected in the rst phase of the project; and (3) design and test of an improved version of the proposed metrics. In this position paper we will present our current work in progress on this subject.

Software Reuse Evaluation based on Functional Similarity in COSMIC-FFP Size Components

Software reuse is often recommended for improving the productivity of the development process. However, recognizing opportunities for reuse remains a challenge. This work proposes a technique to identify opportunities for reuse based on the similarity between software functions. This technique, referred to here as “functional similarity”, is based on functional information collected by the COSM...

Measurement of functional reuse in maintenance

This paper is concerned with the identification and measurement of reuse within projects in which functional enhancements have been added to existing software applications. The proposed approach is based on the measurement of reuse from a functional perspective rather than from a technical perspective. Two key concepts are introduced: a reuse indicator and a predictor ratio. The reuse indicator...

Using COSMIC-FFP to Quantify Functional Reuse in Software Development

One of the means organisations use to adequately measure the performance of their software engineering process, is to try to identify how much reuse has actually occurred. In this paper, the COSMIC-FFP (COSMIC-Full Function Points) measurement method is proposed as a method for quantifying reuse from a functional perspective rather than from a technical perspective. The COSMIC-FFP method has be...

Quantifying Functional Reuse from Object Oriented Requirements Specifications

Software reuse is essential in improving efficiency and productivity in the software development process. This paper analyses reuse within requirements engineering phase by taking and adapting a standard functional size measurement method, COSMIC FFP. Our proposal attempts to quantify reusability from Object Oriented requirements specifications by identifying potential primitives with a high le...

SOFTWARE MEASUREMENT EUROPEAN FORUM Proceedings of SMEF 2005 16 - 18 March 2005 JOLLY

This paper introduces a price-fixing policy to be applied to software procurement general contractual agreements occurring between customers and suppliers. The price-fixing policy aims at overcoming the limits and problems of “Function Point fixed-price” mechanisms. Basically the policy derives from a practical application of the "Business Function Point" (BFP) technique. Assigning the price of...
